Madeline Deutsch, MD, MPH

Madeline Deutsch, MD, MPH

Dr. Madeline Deutsch specializes in providing primary care for gender and sexual minorities, including individuals from the transgender, nonbinary gender, gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer communities. She is the director of UCSF Transgender Care and specializes in managing gender-affirming hormone therapy. Other areas of interest include contraception management and working with patients who have more than one mental health condition.

In addition, Deutsch has special interests in disease prevention, dietary and lifestyle approaches to improving health, and integrative medicine. She believes in collaborating with her patients, involving them in all aspects of their care, and individualizing both preventive measures and treatments.

In her research, Deutsch studies topics including HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (medications to reduce the risk of becoming infected), the use of electronic medical records to capture gender identity and sexual orientation data, and screening for cancer and sexual health risks in transgender populations.

Deutsch earned her medical degree at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. She completed a residency at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center. She also has a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Deutsch has published more than 25 works on gender and sexual minority health topics. She is an associate editor for the journal LGBT Health.

Deutsch is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and serves on the board of directors for the local chapter of the U.S. Professional Association for Transgender Health.
